The principle of tool changing in machining centers: the dance of precision hidden in the “brain of the machine”
On the “metal stage” of a machining center, the tool shop is the humblest but most important “behind the scenes boss.” It manages the storage and retrieval of dozens of tools, determining the speed at which they are changed, directly affecting machining efficiency and even part accuracy. Today we will analyze in simple terms the basic logic of changing a tool in a tool shop and discuss the technological advantages of our 15 years of experience in manufacturing and exporting machine tools.
I. Tool magazine: more than just a "tool storage cabinet", it is an "intelligent planner"
Machining centers can perform multiple processes in a single setup thanks to the tool magazine, its “ammunition store.” It stores various tools such as cutters and drills, and its main job is to quickly and accurately feed the required tool into the spindle according to programmed instructions.
How important is tool change efficiency? For example, when machining automotive parts, a 5-second faster tool change can increase daily productivity by 20%; For precision parts, tool change errors greater than 5 micrometers (1/20 the thickness of a human hair) can result in the entire batch being rejected. Thus, the essence of a tool shop is an automated system that combines accuracy and speed.
II. The whole tool changing process: four steps to complete "tool transfer from one tool to another"
To take the most common disc tool magazine as an example, changing a tool is like a precise dance consisting of four steps:
1. Issuing a command: The CNC issues the command “Tool change”
When a machining program requires a tool change, the CNC system sends the command to the tool shop: “Please send tool number T12!” The tool magazine's PLC controller immediately consults the "tool position map" to determine the location of the target tool.
2. Tool search: the tool head returns to its original position at high speed
The tool magazine initiates the tool search: Disc tool magazines use a servo motor to rotate the tool head, combined with a high-precision encoder to rotate the target tool to the "tool change position" (straight ahead); In chain tool magazines, the chain is used to move the tool holder, stopping precisely at a given position. Speed and stability are key - positioning error must be less than 3 micrometers, otherwise the tool grip will deviate.
3. Tool grip: “handshake” of robotic arms to change tools
The two-handed robotic arms move synchronously: one arm releases the old tool from the spindle and returns it to the tool magazine; the other hand grabs the new tool and pulls it in to connect to the spindle. This checks three things: time synchronization (within 2-4 seconds), stable clamping force (tool does not break or fall) and positioning accuracy (tool holder-spindle interface is perfect, with an error of <0.01mm).
4. Confirmation: “Verifying Identity” system
After a tool change, the tool shop checks whether the contact sensor touches the slot in the tool holder or the laser measures the length and diameter of the tool, confirming the presence of the tool and the correct model. When a problem occurs, an alarm is triggered and the machine stops, preventing errors.
